October is breast care awareness month, and an opportunity to have that conversation about breast awareness, and also know what is normal for you.
This year especially with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a drop in Breast Screen attendance initially due to complete closure, but also now as the community are still fearful and hesitant to access healthcare facilities. Early detection through screening mammograms is still the gold standard, and it does mean increased survival rates.
Recent research in the US and Europe has shown a decline of up to 75% in imaging/referrals for suspected cancers including a 51% for breast cancer. Australia also has some recent statistics publicised reporting a decrease of up to 37% in imaging procedures, with more extensive data to come.
The staff are embracing ‘Pink Up Colac Area Health’ in support of Breast Care Awareness Month.
